Director Capital Programmes

Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail is a subsidiary company of Córas Iompair Éireann which is the publicly owned transport company of Ireland. Its role is to provide rail transport services within the State of Ireland and its network consists of Intercity, Commuter and DART (Dublin metro) services.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the appointee to this newly created position will lead the delivery of all rail‐based capital investment programmes planned by the National Development Plan 2018‐2027. Investment in recent years has delivered major benefits, including: Renewed infrastructure; New Intercity, Commuter and DART fleet; New stations, and upgraded existing stations; New rail lines, including Cork‐Midleton, Ennis‐Athenry, Clonsilla‐M3 Parkway. The appointee will lead on all major capital programme activities and will enable a team of colleagues to deliver a portfolio of programmes. This will involve planning, design, procurement, delivery and operational start‐up of all programmes. The delivery of initiatives will involve partnership with many stakeholders at national and local level – local authorities, the NTA, business groups and the public.

This is a key appointment and candidates will have held senior leadership experience in a comparable operationally complex business with responsibility for significant complex capital programmes. Previous rail experience is desirable to allow the appointee quickly contribute across all priorities but in particular provide insight into the discussions that relate to all rail‐based capital investment

The role requires well‐honed influencing skills, coupled with a track record of leadership and management, ideally gained within a comparable transport or operationally complex environment. Innovative thinkers with strategic vision and flair, candidates must be exceptional communicators with the ability to engage and influence at all levels. Core competencies include strategic thinking ability coupled with a strong delivery/execution focus, commercial awareness, influencing and leadership, as well as the ability to contribute and inspire at the highest level.

The recruit will be tasked with helping to enhance procurement standards of excellence and commercial focus of these activities throughout Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail.

Vehicle Painter, Fleet Casualty Repair, Inchicore

We invite applications from fully certified candidates for the contract role of Vehicle Painter based in the Fleet Casualty Repair of Inchicore Works. This role sits in the heart of the fast paced and highly safety critical Chief Mechanical Engineers Department. Applicants must be familiar with the use of HPLV spraying, the use of 2 pack polyurethane solvent and must have ability to maintain pace as part of a production team.

The range of duties will include bare metal preparation stopping/filling substrates and for anti-corrosive primers to specified thickness. Also, for the application of base, clear and solid paint application, working to defined standards as prescribed by Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail.

The essential requirements for the role of Vehicle Painter are:

  • Appropriate qualification of trade achieved as a vehicle painter, bodymaker/ coachmaker or similar to FETAC Level 6 accreditation or equivalent including but not limited to Solas (formally FÁS) apprenticeship, City & Guilds apprenticeship or higher
  • Experience working as a vehicle painter in the transport industry
  • Excellent knowledge and skills within all aspects of the paint spray industry
  • Previous experience with colour identification, mixing paint and related components
  • Knowledge of secondary paint stages, repair work methods including brushing, roller and aerosol applications
  • Ability to follow and understand technical instructions to achieve agreed targets in line with CME Safety and Quality Standards
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in ensuring a high standard of quality of work with strong attention to detail
  • Quick identification and reporting of problems
  • Ability to work autonomously if needed

We invite applications from fully certified candidates for the contract roles of Maintenance Fitter and Electrical Craftworker based at our Dublin, Laois and Drogheda depots.

These roles sit in the heart of the fast paced and highly safety critical Chief Mechanical Engineers Department. Applicants will be cross-skilled and will be required to work on all vehicle systems and components on various train fleets.

The range of Mechanic and Fitter duties will include; plant and machinery installation, maintenance/repairs, engine maintenance on train fleets, fault finding/problem solving, defect rectification, modifications and heavy maintenance across a range of systems.

The range of Electrical Craftworker duties will include; inspecting and testing electrical systems/equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions, using visual inspections, testing devices and computer software.

The range of Electronic Repair Craftworker duties within Drogheda’s specialist Electronic Repair Facility will include fault finding/rectification on a wide range of electrical and electronic systems, debugging and soldering on Product Circuit Boards (PCBs).

The essential requirements for these roles are:

  • FETAC Level 6 accreditation or equivalent including but not limited to Solas (formally FÁS) apprenticeship, City & Guilds apprenticeship or higher
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the trade area post apprenticeship or relevant experience within a similar industry
  • Ability to read drawings, follow detailed work instructions and procedures
  • Interest in ensuring quality of work standards are high
  • Proven experience in maintenance of electrical systems, industrial equipment or transport equipment (Electrical Craftworker only)
  • Problem solving/fault finding skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Problem solving skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong numerical ability
