Iarnród Éireann is committed to providing a quality train service to the large number of DART, Commuter and Intercity passengers using the railway on a daily basis. In order to ensure safe delivery of these public services we have to constantly maintain and improve the track infrastructure. Most of this work is safety critical maintenance work which has to take place at night when passenger trains are not running.
The Iarnród Éireann Strategic Noise Maps graphically displays the exposure of the receiving environment to noise generated by train movements along specific sections of the rail network, ie within Agglomeration Areas and/or where the operational rail traffic exceeds 30,000 vehicle passages per annum.
Outside people or agencies on occasion wish to carry out works which affect the railway. There are many examples of this, which can range from such as pipes under the railway, construction of bridges or other structures over the line. In this context, we call such people “third parties”.
Iarnród Éireann has over 4,000Km of boundary to manage with thousands of trees growing near the railway. Our priority is operating a safe railway for the large numbers of intercity and commuter users who depend on our services on a daily basis. This necessitates the cutting back of trees and vegetation along the railway boundary as they can obscure signals and contribute to low rail adhesion.
