Supporting Focus Ireland to fight homelessness in Ireland
Throughout December, Iarnród Éireann will be helping Focus Ireland - and you can help too.
This Christmas, Iarnród Éireann is supporting Focus Ireland (CHY 7220) in its bid to fight the growing problem of homelessness in Ireland.
Over 3,194 children are currently homeless nationwide. While the crisis is still deepening, with a record total of 8,492 people now homeless, the situation would be much worse without the lifeline services and housing Focus Ireland provides.
Founder of the organisation Sr. Stan has spoken passionately of the terrible impact being homeless has on children and families “It breaks my heart to know that some of these children have been born into homelessness. Some of them will spend their first Christmas stuck with their family forced to live in one little room together. This is awful and it makes me think back to what Christmas is about…how nobody would take in the baby Jesus and his family. I am sure this will strike a chord with everyone no matter what their beliefs are as these children today have also been turned away and left as homeless. They are our children too and we have a duty as a society to provide a safe home for them.”
The problem of homelessness could be much worse without the great work of the staff of Focus Ireland which is provided 365 days of the year.
This work from January to September this year includes:
- Supporting 12,318 people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home compared to 11,744 in the same period last year
- Providing over 820 homes nationwide
- Helping 290 families out of homelessness compared to 230 in same period in 2016
- Has served over 31,000 hot meals.
It is expected that hundreds of thousands of passengers will travel home with Iarnród Éireann this Christmas. There are many who don’t have a choice to travel home with us. We would like to help give them this choice and are asking for your support.
During December, choirs, musicians and volunteers will be in Dublin Heuston, Dublin Connolly and Dublin Pearse Stations to raise funds and awareness and we're asking if you have any spare change while passing through that you donate this.
Thank you for your support. Let's get people #HomeforChristmas
