     Terms of Use for the Iarnród Éireann booking service

In addition to the terms below, your use of the Iarnród Éireann website is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use applicable to this website. By using the Iarnród Éireann online transaction services, you are agreeing, and you are signifying your agreement, to be bound by the terms below and the said Terms and Conditions of Use.

Bye-laws and Conditions of Carriage.

All tickets are issued subject to the Córas Iompair Éireann Bye-laws and Iarnród Éireann's Conditions of Carriage. Click here for more details, or for a copy of these documents please write to:

Online bookings.

Online bookings may only be made for certain Iarnród Éireann-operated journeys. You can book online for up to six passengers per booking provided that all passengers, including the card holder, travel as part of the same booking.

Changes and cancellations

Passengers wishing to travel on the same day, but on an alternative train other than the time shown on their ticket, can do so provided seats are available, by paying a surcharge. The surcharge of up to €40 should be paid at the booking office before boarding the train. If a booking office is not open the surcharge must be paid on board the train. All tickets are only valid for travel on the dates printed on the ticket.

Travelling on an invalid ticket will result in a fine of €100 in addition to the appropriate surcharge.

To cancel a reservation call the Iarnród Éireann Travel Centre on 1850 366 222 (00 353 1 8366222) . Opening hours are 08.30 - 18.00 Monday to Friday and 09.00 - 18.00 Saturday or alternatively, outside opening hours, email info@irishrail.ie. Change and Cancellation charges apply. Cancellation requests made after the dates printed on the ticket cannot be facilitated. Bookings that have not been cancelled prior to the expiry date on the ticket are not eligible for refund.

In order to qualify for a refund, cancelled tickets must be submitted to Iarnród Éireann within 28 days of the expiry date as printed on the ticket. Cancelled tickets should be submitted to Iarnród Éireann Travel Centre, 35 Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1

The following refund rules apply:

  • Cancelled up to the day before travel - 80% refund on the ticket price.
  • Cancelled on the day of travel - 50% refund on the ticket price.
  • All cancellations must be made before the time of travel to be considered eligible for refund.
  • Tickets must be presented for cancellation.
  • No refund on card fees.

Payment requirements.

You need a credit/debit card to make a booking through this website. Iarnród Éireann currently accepts Mastercard, Visa or laser. A credit card fee of €3 is applicable to each booking. Your credit/laser card will be charged when you click the "Place Order" button on the "Card Authorisation" page. At that time, your billing address is verified and your ticket(s) are issued. For your security, any ticket(s) purchased on this website can only be sent to the billing address of the credit card holder.

Ticket Collection Options

Postage
Where postage has been selected the ticket(s) will be posted to the billing address of the card holder. For addresses outside the Republic of Ireland, the ticket(s) must be collected at the specified station.

Vending Machine
Tickets that are booked online for through our telesales service can be collected via vending machines at Dublin, Cork, Galway & Limerick stations. This facility will be available at more stations and vending machines soon.
Just enter the Reservation Number on screen or swipe the credit card you booked with.

Booking Office
Click here to view the list of stations where tickets can be collected. Tickets may be collected at the booking office by presenting the credit/debit card used to make the booking. If the appropriate card is not presented, then the ticket(s) may only be collected by presenting one of the following;

  • A valid driving licence or passport
  • An alternative credit/laser card to the one used for the booking
  • Note:Iarnród Éireann reserves the right not to furnish any ticket to any person other than the holder of the credit/laser card used for the booking

Reservation Special NoticeReservations on the 07.30 & 15.30 services to Galway/Westport Monday to Thursday and Saturday cannot be guaranteed due to technical reasons with the splitting of the train in Athlone. Passengers for Galway please join the first three coaches at the top of the train and Westport should board the rear three coaches.

Smart Cards

Purchasing Smart Cards

You can use this website to purchase Rail Only Short Hop Zone Smart cards. These cards are subject to the bye laws, regulations and conditions. Your Smart Card may be replaced by the National Transport Authority(http://www.nationaltransport.ie/) on the introduction of a replacement scheme.

Purchasing Stored Value for your Smart Card

You can use irishrail.ie to purchase stored credit for your Smartcard. You can use stored travel credit to buy a valid ticket that will be loaded onto your Smartcard. You can buy a valid ticket by validating your Smartcard at a ticket gates or validation pole. You will not be able to validate your Smartcard unless you have some stored travel credit on it.

Travel credit that is unused after 24 months will be retained by Iarnród Éreann.

Smart Card Data

Purchase and use of a smartcard will entitle the holder of the smartcard and the registered user of the smartcard to see data indicating card usage.
