Upcoming line improvement works, including timetable alterations to/from Heuston, from Saturday 21st April

Here you will find a complete list of planned engineering works and changes to Iarnród Éireann rail services.

Service Arrangements

Iarnród Éireann is continuing its programme of line improvement works, focusing this year on the section between Newbridge and Ballybrophy.

The annual investment of €10 million in line improvements will lead to higher reliability, smoother running of trains and with other works deliver consistent 160kph speeds (100 mph). This will deliver journey time improvements for customers.

We advise customers to check their journey details prior to travelling. For a full list of available services on your day of travel, please check our Journey Planner for all timetable query or click on your route below for a summary service arrangements;

Belfast (Enterprise) Services

Saturday 5th, Sunday 6th and Monday 7th May

  • Belfast services will operate by bus transfer Connolly to Drogheda and by train Drogheda to Belfast. 
  • 07.35hrs Connolly/Belfast on Monday 7th May will operate as bus transfer to Drogheda
  • Please note; Bus transfers TO Malahide/Drogheda will depart from Connolly Station Car Park, which is located off Platform 2 in the station. Please check the journey planner above or our timetable PDF below for full details.

Cork, Limerick and Tralee Services

Saturday 21st April, 5th, 12th and 26th May and 9th June 

  • Cork services will operate every hour in each direction with altered timings
  • Limerick services will operate every hour, connecting to Cork services at Limerick Junction
  • Tralee services will operate every 2 hours, connecting to Cork services at Mallow
  • 17:05hrs Dublin to Tralee is cancelled. Passengers should board the 17:05hrs Dublin to Cork service and change at Mallow for a connecting service. Please note that there will be a delay of 25 - 30 mins from Mallow to Tralee
  • Nenagh Line services will operate with altered timings, please change at Ballybrophy for connecting services
  • Please note - On Saturday 12th May a large number of services will have their departure times changed on the Dublin to Cork, Mallow to Cork and Tralee, Limerick to Limerick Junction and Limerick to Ballybrophy routes.

Saturday 28th April

  • 20:25hrs Cork to Heuston - will operate to Portlaoise only, bus transfers from Portlaoise to Heuston
  • 21:00hrs Heuston to Cork - bus transfers from Heuston to Portlaoise, train from Portlaoise to Cork
  • 22:36hrs Limerick Junction to Limerick is deferred to 23:12hrs

Sunday 29th April

  • 08:30hrs Heuston to Tralee - will operate as a bus transfer to Portlaoise only,train from Portlaoise to Tralee
  • 10:08hrs Limerick Jctn to Limerick is deferred to 10:50hrs
  • 10:45hrs Mallow to Cork is deferred to 11:22hrs

DART Services

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May

  • There will be no DART service between Connolly and Malahide/Howth stations.  Dublin Bus will accept valid rail stations for travel within the affected area ONLY.  DART services will operate to/from Connolly/Bray/Greystones only

     

Galway and Westport Services

Saturday 21st April, 5th and 12th May 

  • Galway services will operate as normal
  • Westport services will operate as normal

Saturday 28th April

  • 18:15hrs Westport to Heuston - will operate to Portarlington only, bus transfers from Portarlington to Heuston
  • 19:20hrs Galway to Heuston - will operate to Portarlington only, bus transfers from Portarlington to Heuston
  • 19:35hrs Heuston to Galway is deferred to 19:45hrs

Sunday 29th April

  • 08:00hrs Heuston to Galway - will operate as a bus transfer to Portarlington only,train from Portarlington to Galway
  • 09:40hrs Athlone to Westport is deferred to 10:06hrs.
  • 10:30hrs Ballina to Manulla Jctn is deferred to 10:55hrs
  • 11:00hrs Galway to Heuston is deferred to 11:35hrs
  • 11:05hrs Manulla Jctn to Ballina is deferred to 11:32hrs
  • 11:40hrs Heuston to Galway will not serve Clara

Saturday 26th May and 9th June

  • Galway services will operate with some minor time changes
  • Westport services will operate with some minor time changes

Northern Commuter

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May

  • Commuter services will operate as a bus transfer between Connolly and Malahide. Services will continue by train between Malahide and and all stations to Dundalk.
  • Please note; Bus transfers TO Malahide/Drogheda will depart from Connolly Station Car Park, which is located off Platform 2 in the station. 

Portlaoise Commuter Services

Saturday 21st April, 5th and 12th May

  • Portlaoise Commuter services will operate as normal

Saturday 28th April

  • 21:25hrs Portlaoise to Heuston - bus transfers from Portlaoise to Kildare, train Kildare to Heuston
  • 21:05hrs Heuston to Portlaoise - will operate to Kildare only, bus transfers from Kildare to Portlaoise
  • 22:10hrs Heuston to Portlaoise - will operate to Kildare only, bus transfers from Kildare to Portlaoise
  • 23:10hrs Heuston to KIldare is deferred to 23:20hrs

Saturday 26th May and 9th June 

  • Portlaoise Commuter services will operate hourly between Dublin Heuston and Newbridge only, with the exception of 07:10hrs Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston, 22:10hrs Heuston to Portlaoise and 23:10hrs Heuston to Kildare services which will operate
  • There will be no other Commuter services between Portlaoise, Kildare and Dublin. However customers travelling to/from Portlaoise, Portarlington, Monasterevin, Kildare and Newbridge will be served by InterCity trains

Waterford Services

  • Waterford services will operate as normal

Sunday 29th April

  • 09:10hrs Heuston to Waterford is deferred to 09:30hrs

Western Rail Corridor and Waterford to Limerick Junction Services

  • Limerick to Galway (Western Rail Corridor) services will operate with some minor time changes
  • Waterford to Limerick Junction services will operate with altered timings

Catering on Rail Iarnród Éireann Services

On affected services, a trolley service will be provided on all InterCity services. Dining car and restaurant car facilities will not be available.

How can I reserve a seat on an Iarnród Éireann Service?

  • When you purchase an Adult, Child or Student ticket on this website or through our call centre (01 83 66 222) you are given an assigned seat as part of the price
  • Customers who are already in possession of or purchasing on the day of travel a valid standard class ticket(s) such as Family Tickets, Day Return, Open Return, Weekly, Monthly, Annual, InterRail and Free Travel pass holders can reserve a seat on a service for a small fee per person each way
