Line Improvement Works to/from Heuston - Revised Timetable Sat 1st April

Customers using our services to and from Heuston, and all connecting services are advised to re-check your times before travelling on affected dates.

Iarnród Éireann is continuing its programme of line improvement works on the Dublin to Cork line, focusing this year on the section between Hazelhatch and Portlaoise.

The annual investment of €10 million in line improvements will lead to higher reliability, smoother running of trains and with other works deliver consistent 160kph speeds (100 mph). This will deliver journey time improvements for customers.

Service arrangements

To facilitate these works, there will be service changes on selected Saturdays* this year. Works will not take place during the peak tourism and sporting season of August, or on Saturdays of other major events i.e. sporting and concerts etc. There will be some minor modifications to service arrangements subject to precise work locations as the project proceeds.

Cork, Limerick and Tralee

Saturday 1st April:

  • Dublin Heuston and Cork services will operate every two hours in each direction, with higher capacity on all services.
  • Dublin Heuston and Limerick services will operate every two hours, connecting to/from all Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Limerick Junction.
  • Dublin Heuston  and Tralee services will operate every two hours, connecting to/from Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Mallow.
  • 17:05hrs Dublin Heuston to Tralee is cancelled. Passengers should board the 17:20hrs Dublin to Cork service and change at Mallow. Please note that there will be a delay of 50 mins from Mallow to Tralee.
  • Customers for Ballybrophy and Nenagh Line should change at Portlaoise for connecting services. 07.10hrs & 15.30hrs Limerick to Portlaoise via Nenagh, 10.33hrs and 18.48hrs Portlaoise to Limerick via Nenagh, and 19.25hrs Dublin Heuston to Cork will be the only trains to serve Ballybrophy.
  • 21.40hrs Dublin Heuston to Cork will split at Limerick Jctn. Customers for Mallow and Cork should board the front 4 carriages, and customers for Limerick should board the rear 4 carriages.
  • Passengers travelling on the 21.10hrs Cork to Dublin Heuston and intermediate stations there will be a train from Cork to Portlaoise and a bus transfer from Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston. This will also affect customers travelling on the 21.25hrs from Limerick to Dublin Heuston.

Saturday 8th April:

  • Dublin Heuston and Cork services will operate every hour in each direction with altered timings. 
  • Dublin Heuston and Limerick services will operate every hour, with connections to/from all Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Limerick Junction.
  • Dublin Heuston and Tralee services will operate every two hours, with connections to/from Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Mallow.
  • 17:05hrs Dublin Heuston to Tralee is cancelled. Passengers should board the 17:05hrs Dublin Heuston to Cork service and change at Mallow. Please note that there will be a delay of 25mins from Mallow to Tralee.
  • Nenagh Line customers, please change at Ballybrophy as normal for connecting services.

Galway and Westport

Saturday 1st April:

  • Services between Galway and Dublin Heuston will operate every two hours in each direction.
  • Westport services will operate to/from Athlone with connections to/from Galway services.
  • 07:15 Westport to Dublin Heuston is advanced to 06:35hrs and 13:10hrs Westport to Dublin Heuston is advanced to 12:40hrs. Customers please change trains at Athlone for all stations to Galway and Dublin Heuston.
  • 07:05hrs Ballina to Manulla Junction is advanced to 06:25hrs and 13:00hrs Ballina to Manulla Junction is advanced to 12:30hrs. 

Saturday 8th April:

  • Services between Galway and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal.
  • Services between Westport and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal.

Waterford

Saturday 1st April:

  • Please note that there will be bus transfers between Dublin Heuston and Athy for all services

  • Services between Waterford and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal.

Portlaoise and Kildare to Dublin Commuter services

Saturday 1st April:

  • Portlaoise commuter services will operate hourly between Dublin Heuston and Hazelhatch only, with the exception of 07:10hrs Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston, and 22:30hrs Dublin Heuston to Portlaoise services which will operate.
  • There will be no other commuter services between Portlaoise, Kildare and Dublin Heuston. Customers travelling to/from Portlaoise, Portarlington, Monasterevin, Kildare, Newbridge and Sallins and Naas and Hazelhatch and Celbridge will be served by InterCity services.
  • On Friday 31st March and Saturday 1st April, the 23:10hrs Dublin Heuston to Kildare service will be a train from Dublin Heuston to Hazelhatch and a bus transfer from Hazelhatch to Kildare.

Saturday 8th April:

  • Portlaoise commuter services will operate as normal.

Catering

On affected Saturdays, a trolley service will be provided on all InterCity services to / from Heuston. Dining car and restaurant car facilities will not be available.

First Class

On affected Saturdays, first class facilities will not be available.

If you have already booked a train on an affected date which has seen a change in time or seating availability, we will contact you to reschedule your booking, or offer a full refund.

How can I reserve a seat?

  • When you purchase an Adult, Child or Student ticket on this website or through our call centre (1850 366 222) you are given an assigned seat as part of the price.
  • Customers who are already in possession of or purchasing on the day of travel a valid standard class ticket(s) such as Family Tickets, Day Return, Open Return, Weekly, Monthly, Annual, InterRail and Free Travel pass holders can reserve a seat on a service for €5.00 per person each way.
