Line improvement works - revised timetable to/from Heuston Saturday 29th April

Customers using our services to and from Heuston, and all connecting services are advised to re-check your times before travelling on affected dates.

Iarnród Éireann is continuing its programme of line improvement works on the Dublin to Cork line, focusing this year on the section between Hazelhatch and Thurles.

The annual investment of €10 million in line improvements will lead to higher reliability, smoother running of trains and with other works deliver consistent 160kph speeds (100 mph). This will deliver journey time improvements for customers.

Service arrangements

To facilitate these works, there will be service changes on selected Saturdays* this year. Works will not take place during the peak tourism and sporting season of August, or on Saturdays of other major events i.e. sporting and concerts etc. There will be some minor modifications to service arrangements subject to precise work locations as the project proceeds.

Cork, Limerick and Tralee

Saturday 29th April:

  • Dublin Heuston and Cork services will operate every hour until the 13.00hrs Heuston/Cork. After 13.00hrs, services between Dublin and Cork will operate by bus transfer from Dublin Heuston to Newbridge and by train from Newbridge to Cork, at 13.35hrs and 15.00hrs from Heuston and then approximately every 2 hours. 
  • Cork and Dublin Heuston will operate every hour until the 10.40 Cork/Heuston. After 10.40hrs, services between Cork and Dublin will operate as a train from Cork to Newbridge and by bus transfer from Newbridge to  Dublin Heuston, at 11.45hrs and 12.40hrs from Cork and then approximately every 2 hours. 21.25hrs Cork/Dublin Heuston will operate to Portlaoise only with bus transfers from Portlaoise to Heuston.
  • Dublin Heuston and Limerick services will operate with connections to/from all Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Limerick Junction.
  • Dublin Heuston and Tralee services will operate every two hours, with connections to/from Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Mallow.
  • Tralee services will operate every 2 hours, connecting to and from Cork services at Mallow.
  • Nenagh Line customers, please change at Ballybrophy as normal for connecting services.

Saturday 6th, 13th and 20th May, 3rd, 10th June and 1st July

  • Dublin Heuston and Cork services will operate every hour in each direction with altered timings, please check the journey planner or timetable PDF below for full details.
  • Dublin Heuston and Limerick services will operate every hour, connecting to/from all Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Limerick Junction.
  • Dublin Heuston and Tralee services will operate every 2 hours, connecting to/from Dublin Heuston and Cork services at Mallow.
  • 17:05hrs Dublin Heuston to Tralee is cancelled. Passengers should board the 17:05hrs Dublin Heuston to Cork service and change at Mallow. Please note that there will be a delay of 25-30 mins from Mallow to Tralee.
  • Nenagh Line customers, please change at Ballybrophy as normal for connecting services.

Galway and Westport

Saturday 29th April:

  • Services between Galway and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal until 12.45hrs Dublin Heuston/Westport, 13.25hrs Dublin Heuston/Galway, 09.45hrs Westport/Dublin Heuston and 11.05hrs Galway/Dublin Heuston.
  • Due to Major Engineering Works between Sallins and Newbridge, all services after the above listed services will operate as bus transfers between Dublin Heuston and Kildare in both directions for the rest of the day.

Saturday 6th and 13th May, 10th June and 1st July

  • Services between Galway and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal.
  • Services between Westport and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal.

Saturday 13th and 20th May

  • Services between Galway and Dublin Heuston will operate with some minor time changes, please check the journey planner or timetable PDF below for full details.
  • Services between Westport and Dublin Heuston will operate with some minor time changes, please check the journey planner or timetable PDF below for full details.

Waterford

Saturday 29th April:

  • Services between Waterford and Dublin Heuston will operate as normal until 13.15hrs Dublin Heuston/Waterford and 11.00hrs Waterford/Dublin Heuston.
  • Due to Major Engineering Works between Sallins and Newbridge, all services after the above listed services will operate as bus transfers between Dublin Heuston and Athy in both directions for the rest of the day.

Saturday 6th May, 3rd, 10th June and 1st July

  • Services between Waterford and Dublin will operate as normal.

Saturday 13th and 20th May

  • Services between Waterford and Dublin will operate with some minor time changes, please check the journey planner or timetable PDF below for full details.

Portlaoise and Kildare to Dublin Commuter services

Saturday 29th April:

  • Portlaoise commuter services will operate as normal until 13.20hrs Dublin Heuston/Portlaoise and 12.20hrs Portlaoise/Dublin Heuston.
  • Due to Major Engineering Works between Sallins and Newbridge, after the above listed services there will then be an hourly shuttle service between Heuston and Hazelhatch commencing with 14.15hrs Dublin Heuston/Hazelhatch and 14.45hrs Hazelhatch/Dublin Heuston.
  • Bus transfers will operate between Hazelhatch, Sallins and Newbridge connecting with the hourly shuttle service to and from Dublin Heuston.
  • After the 13.20 hrs, customers travelling between Dublin Heuston and Newbridge, Kildare, Monasterevin, Portarlington and Portlaoise can avail of the bus transfers to Newbridge for onward connection by Cork services serving Kildare, Portarlington and Portlaoise, or to Kildare for onward connection by Galway and Westport services serving Monasterevin and Portarlington.

Saturday 6th May, 3rd, 10th June and 1st July

  • Portlaoise commuter services will operate as normal.

Saturday 13th and 20th May

  • Portlaoise commuter services will operate hourly between Dublin Heuston and Newbridge only, with the exception of 07:20hrs Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston, 22:10hrs Dublin Heuston to Portlaoise and 23:10hrs Dublin Heuston to Kildare services which will operate.
  • There will be no other Commuter services between Portlaoise, Kildare and Dublin Heuston. However customers travelling to/from Portlaoise, Portarlington, Monasterevin, Kildare and Newbridge will be served by Intercity trains.

Catering

On affected Saturdays, a trolley service will be provided on all InterCity services to / from Heuston. Dining car and restaurant car facilities will not be available.

First Class

On affected Saturdays, first class facilities will not be available.

How can I reserve a seat?

  • When you purchase an Adult, Child or Student ticket on this website or through our call centre (1850 366 222) you are given an assigned seat as part of the price.
  • Customers who are already in possession of or purchasing on the day of travel a valid standard class ticket(s) such as Family Tickets, Day Return, Open Return, Weekly, Monthly, Annual, InterRail and Free Travel pass holders can reserve a seat on a service for €5.00 per person each way.
