Upcoming Engineering Works across the Network

Here you will find a complete list of planned engineering works and changes to Iarnród Éireann rail services.

Service Arrangements

Line Improvement Works

Iarnród Éireann is continuing its programme of line improvement works on selected Saturdays, focusing this year on the section between Newbridge and Ballybrophy.

The annual investment of €10 million in line improvements will lead to higher reliability, smoother running of trains and with other works deliver consistent 160kph speeds (100 mph). This will deliver journey time improvements for customers.

Cork, Limerick and Tralee Services

Due to 6 weeks of Engineering Works between Mallow and Cork, the following alterations will apply Monday to Thursday from Monday 21st January until Thursday 28th February:

  • 21:00hrs Heuston to Cork will operate to Mallow only, bus transfers from Mallow to Cork
  • 22:30hrs Mallow to Cork will be substituted by bus transfers
  • 22:00hrs Cork to Mallow will be substituted by bus transfers
  • 23:00hrs Cork to Mallow will be substituted by bus transfers

Please note that due to Engineering works between Kildare and Portlaoise, the following service alterations will apply:

Saturday 26th January

  • 21:00hrs Heuston to Cork will operate as a bus transfer from Heuston to Portlaoise and train from Portlaoise to Cork
  • 18:25hrs Cork to Heuston will operate to Portlaoise only, bus transfers from Portlaoise to Heuston
  • 20:25hrs Cork to Heuston will operate to Portlaoise only, bus transfers from Portlaoise to Portarlington, Monasterevin, Kildare, Newbridge and Heuston

Sunday 27th January

  • 10:45hrs Mallow/Cork is deferred to 11:22hrs
  • 08:30hrs Heuston to Tralee will be bus transfers from Heuston to Portlaoise, train from Portlaoise to Tralee
  • 10:08hrs Limerick Jctn. to Limerick Colbert is deferred to 10:40hrs

Galway and Westport Services

Please note that due to Engineering works between Kildare and Portlaoise, the following service alterations will apply:

Saturday 26th January

  • 18:15hrs Westport to Heuston will operate to Portarlington only, bus transfer from Portarlington to Heuston
  • 19:20hrs Galway to Heuston will operate to Portarlington only, bus transfers from Portarlington to Heuston 

Sunday 27th January

  • 08:00hrs Heuston/Galway will be bus transfers from Heuston to Kildare and Portarlington, train from Portarlington to Galway
  • 09:40hrs Athlone to Westport is deferred to 10:06hrs
  • 10:30hrs Ballina to Manulla Jctn. is deferred to 10:55hrs
  • 11:05hrs Manulla Jctn. to Ballina is deferred to 11:32hrs
  • 07:50hrs Westport to Heuston will operate in an altered path
  • 11:40hrs Heuston to Galway will NOT serve Clara
  • 11:00hrs Galway to Heuston is deferred to 11:35hrs

Please note due to engineering works at Glasnevin Junction NO services will call at Drumcondra station on the 26th and 27th January. 

Saturday 26th January

  • Connolly/Maynooth services will operate at altered timings
  • Clonsilla/M3 Parkway will operate at altered timings

Sunday 27th January

  • Connolly/Maynooth services will operate at altered timings
  • Clonsilla/M3 Parkway will operate at altered timings

Portlaoise and Newbridge Commuters

Please note that due to Engineering works between Kildare and Portlaoise, the following service alterations will apply:

Saturday 26th January

  • 19:45hrs Heuston to Portlaoise is advanced to 19:05hrs
  • 21:05hrs Heuston to Portlaoise will operate to Kildare only, bus transfers from Kildare to Monasterevin, Portarlington and Portlaoise
  • 22:10hrs Heuston to Portlaoise will operate to Kildare only, bus transfers from Portlaoise to Portarlington, Monasterevin and Klidare, train from Kildare to Heuston
  • 22:02hrs Kildare to Heuston is advanced to 21:46hrs
  • 22:30hrs Portlaoise to Heuston will commence from KIldare at 23:00hrs and will operate in an altered path

Catering on Rail Iarnród Éireann Services

On affected services, a trolley service will be provided on all InterCity services. Dining car and restaurant car facilities will not be available.

How can I reserve a seat on an Iarnród Éireann Service?

When you purchase an Adult, Child or Student ticket on this website or through our call centre (01-8366222) you are given an assigned seat as part of the price

Customers who are already in possession of or purchasing on the day of travel a valid standard class ticket(s) such as Family Tickets, Day Return, Open Return, Weekly, Monthly, Annual, InterRail and Free Travel pass holders can reserve a seat on a service for a small fee per person each way
