Introduction
The Kildare Route Project has its origins in the National Development Plan, which identified the need to invest in public transport and in particular to improve the quality, speed and reliability of rail services, in order to reduce private car usage.
The Kildare Route Project is provided for under Transport 21, the government's public transport initiative. The project will meet the ever increasing demand for rail transport by increasing the capacity and frequency of trains serving the route. The project will facilitate the provision of new commuter stations as well as upgrading existing stations. It will also deliver improved transport services in Kildare, Carlow and Laois.
The Dublin Transportation Office also highlighted the need for investment in services along this route, based on predictions that commuter activity in this zone will substantially increase over the coming years
