What are the conditions of travel?

Customers who hold a Free Travel / DSFA Pass can book on their chosen service by selecting the 'Free Travel Pass' option in the Passenger selection box. Customers are advised there is limited availability for Free Travel bookings online.

  • You can purchase the ticket above using our Journey Planner. Tickets can only be purchased up to 90 days in advance.
  • An allocation of bookings on all InterCity services can be reserved online without a fee for 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders'. When this allocation is fully booked, all remaining seats can be reserved by 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders' for €2.50 per journey.

What are the conditions of travel?

Where there is doubt regarding the age qualification, it is the responsibility of the passenger or their guardian or parent to produce satisfactory evidence of age when requested by any Iarnród Éireann staff member. Amendments and cancellations are subject to the fare purchased ie Low, Semi Flexible, Flexible, First Class. 

Children under 5 years travel free in standard class on any Iarnród Éireann services when accompanied by a passenger holding a valid ticket, provided children do not occupy seats required for paying passengers. Failure to produce a valid ticket, appropriate ID or surcharge where necessary will result in a fine of €100 together with the relevant unpaid fare.

*Children aged 5 to 8 can now travel free on Transport for Ireland (TFI) services with a Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card. For more information and to apply, please visit the Leap Card website.

  • Young Adults (19-25 years) and Students in full time education

What are the conditions of travel?

  • Customers must be in possession of a  TFI Young Adult (19-25 years) Leap Card or a TFI Student Leap Card to avail of student discounted tickets
  • Individual third level institution cards or ISIC cards are no longer accepted as valid forms of ID
  • Amendments and cancellations are subject to the fare purchased ie Low, Semi Flexible, Flexible, First Class
  • Failure to produce a valid ticket, appropriate valid ID or surcharge where necessary will result in a fine and the relevant unpaid fare.

Christmas and New Year rail services, including late night DART and Commuter

Iarnród Éireann has advised customers of rail service details across the Christmas and New Year period.

Key aspects of this year's schedules include:

  • Late night DART and Commuter services on the three weekends before Christmas and on New Year's Eve
  • Revised schedules from Christmas Eve 24th December 2025 to New Year's Day 1st January 2026 inclusive
  • All time changes are detailed on our journey planner, and services are available to book

Customers are also reminded that pre-booking is strongly advised on Intercity services, particularly at busiest times.

Late night DART and Commuter services

Late night DART and Commuter services will operate from Thursday 4th December on the weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

This year, late night services will operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.  The services will operate across the DART network, as well as Commuter services to Maynooth, Dundalk, and to Kildare (via the Phoenix Park Tunnel)

The full schedule of DART and Commuter services is as follows:

Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December

Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th December

Thursday 18th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th December

  • 00:30 and 01:30 from Pearse serving all stations to Howth
  • 00:35 and 01:35 from Connolly serving all stations to Greystones
  • 00:40 and 01:40 from Pearse serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk
  • 00:27 and 02:10 from Pearse serving all stations to Maynooth
  • 23:55 and 01:58 from Pearse serving all stations to Drumcondra, and all stations from ParkWest to Kildare

Late night services will also operate after New Year’s festivities in Dublin city centre, with details below in the New Year’s Eve section.

Fares will be charged at normal rates, meaning customers can use Leapcard and buy cash fares for the best value Christmas travel option. 

Furthermore, weekly, monthly and annual season tickets are valid on late night services, so season ticket holders will be able to use the services at no extra charge.

Late night services will have security personnel on board to ensure customer safety.

Full rail services summary – Wednesday 24th December 2025 to Friday 2nd January 2026 inclusive

Christmas Eve Wednesday 24th December 2025

  • Weekday InterCity service but with cancellations and alterations on certain routes, with last services between 18:00hrs and 20:30hrs approx.
  • DART and Commuter will operate a Saturday service with last services between 19:25hrs and 21:00hrs approx. Please check times at irishrail.ie
  • Phoenix Park Tunnel Commuter (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch and Newbridge) route will operate a reduced service until 19:45hrs approx.
  • Cork Commuter will operate a Saturday service until 20:00hrs to 21:00 hrs approx.

Christmas Day Thursday 25th December 2025 and St Stephen’s Day Friday 26th December 2025

  • No train services operating on any routes.

Saturday 27th December 2025

  • Normal Saturday service but with cancellations and alterations on certain Intercity routes.

Sunday 28th December 2025

  • Normal Sunday service but with cancellations and alterations on certain Intercity routes.

Monday 29th to Tuesday 30th December 2025

  • Revised and reduced InterCity services, check times before travel.
  • Saturday service on DART and Commuter routes
  • Saturday service on Cork Commuter routes.
  • Saturday service on Portlaoise Commuter route.
  • Revised Phoenix Park Tunnel (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch to Newbridge) services.

New Year’s Eve Wednesday 31st December 2025

  • Weekday InterCity service but with cancellations and alterations on certain routes
  • Saturday service on DART and Commuter routes, with additional DART services to/from Howth and Dun Laoghaire for fireworks displays taking place at 19:00hrs
  • Revised Phoenix Park Tunnel (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch to Newbridge) services.
  • Cork Commuter will operate a Saturday service.
  • Additional late-night services will operate after Dublin New Year’s Eve events:
    • 01:30 and 02:30 from DublinPearse serving all stations to Howth
    • 01:35 and 02:35 from Dublin Connollyserving all stations to Greystones
    • 01:40 and 02:40 from DublinPearse, serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk
    • 01:20 and 03:05 from DublinPearse serving all stations to Maynooth
    • 00:55 and 02:58 from DublinPearse serving all stations to Drumcondra, and all stations from ParkWest to Kildare

New Year’s Day Thursday 1st January 2026 

  • Revised and reduced InterCity services, check times before travel.
  • Sunday service on DART and Commuter routes
  • Sunday service on Cork Commuter and Portlaoise Commuter route.
  • No service on Phoenix Park Tunnel (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch to Newbridge) route.

Friday 2nd January 2026

Normal services resume on all routes.
