Event held at the station to mark this important milestone
Representatives from Iarnród Éireann’s Disability Users Group, local elected representatives and members of the community from Rathmore attended a special event at the Station today to mark the completion of accessibility works at the station.
Contractors, Ward and Burke, working on behalf of Iarnród Éireann completed the work in 13 months. The works included the provision of a new footbridge over the railway, featuring two 13 person lifts and other improvement works around the station.
Funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority, the Accessibility programme is an integral element of Iarnród Éireann’s ongoing investment programme to continuously improve accessibility of its stations and services. Rathmore is the latest new lift and passenger bridge on the network and follows the opening of Little Island and Banteer last year. Accessibility upgrades are ongoing at five other stations on the network and many more are planned.
The company’s Disability Users Group provides direct input from disability representative bodies and users of rail services in developing accessibility programmes and projects.
Speaking at the opening of the bridge, Programme Manager for Iarnród Éireann, Colin Grimes said:
“The opening of this bridge at Rathmore demonstrates our commitment to making the railway more accessible to all. This new infrastructure will provide ease of access for generations to come for customers from Rathmore. We are also honoured to be joined by members of our Disability Users Group here today as their input is essential to ensuring that the upgrade works that I and my team undertake provide the best possible solution for persons with reduced mobility”
John O’Flynn, Head of Customer Experience at the National Transport Authority said:
“We are proud to support Iarnród Éireann in delivering meaningful improvements to accessibility across the rail network. These upgrades will make a real difference in the daily lives of passengers with reduced mobility. The NTA remains committed to funding and advancing accessibility projects that foster a more equitable and connected public transport system.”
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr. Martin Grady said:
“This Project shows how committed Iarnród Éireann is to providing accessibility for all rail users with a focus on those with disabilities and limited mobility. I want to commend the National Transport Authority for providing the funding to bring this project to fruition and the Contractors, Ward and Burke for a high standard finish to the project. I want to take this opportunity to also highlight Iarnród Éireann's existing accessibility features for passengers with disabilities, accessible space on carriages, priority seating, ramps and staff assistance, the footbridge, lifts and upgraded works will complement the existing services in place”.
