What are the conditions of travel?

Customers who hold a Free Travel / DSFA Pass can book on their chosen service by selecting the 'Free Travel Pass' option in the Passenger selection box. Customers are advised there is limited availability for Free Travel bookings online.

  • You can purchase the ticket above using our Journey Planner. Tickets can only be purchased up to 90 days in advance.
  • An allocation of bookings on all InterCity services can be reserved online without a fee for 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders'. When this allocation is fully booked, all remaining seats can be reserved by 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders' for €2.50 per journey.

In addition to the terms below, your use of the Iarnród Éireann online booking is subject to the Terms and Conditions of use applicable to this website. By using the Iarnród Éireann online booking service, you are agreeing, and you are signifying your agreement, to be bound by the terms below and the said Terms and Conditions of Use.

Changes and Cancellations Rules

By using this website or our call centre booking service, Low Fare, Semi Flexible, Flexible and First Class tickets can be amended and cancelled subject to the ticket and fare rules applicable. These ticket rules are presented to you when you select any of the available ticket(s) for your desired journey.

Cancellations or Amendments

  • Collect at Ticket Machine – can be amended subject to the conditions of the ticket type purchased once the ticket(s) has not been collected from a Ticket Vending Machine
  • Download QR Ticket(s) - can be amended subject to the conditions of the ticket type purchased once the QR Ticket has not been validated ie scanned at a validator in a station or by a staff member onboard a service

Please note bookings must be amended online through the 'My Account' or the 'Manage My Booking' section of the website. Requests for cancellations or amendments via email will not be accepted. Customers who are experiencing issues with their online booking can call our Call Centre.

Customers can also access their booking through the ‘Click here to view, amend or cancel your booking ' link in their booking confirmation email.

The conditions for each ticket type are listed below;

Low Fare

Your ticket is valid on your selected service only. Amendments or cancellations are allowed online up to 48 hours in advance of the outward journey, subject to 50 percent fee plus fare difference.

Semi Flexible

Your ticket is valid on your selected service only. Amendments or cancellations are allowed online up to 24 hours in advance of the outward journey, subject to 20 percent fee plus fare difference.

Flexible

Your ticket is valid on your selected service only. Amendments or cancellations are allowed online for free up to 60 minutes in advance of the outward journey.

First Class

Your ticket is valid on your selected service only. Amendments or cancellations are allowed online for free up to 60 minutes in advance of the outward journey. 

Group Discounts

Where discounts are applied online ie group rates, discount or voucher codes, the cancellation fee is based on the gross ticket price before any discounts.

Free Travel Pass or Valid Ticket Holder

You must be in possession of or purchasing on the day of travel a valid standard class ticket(s) such as Free Travel Pass, Family Ticket, Single, Day Return, Open Return, Weekly, Monthly, Annual or InterRail in order to book onto a service. Failure to produce a valid ticket, appropriate ID or surcharge where necessary will result in a fine of €100 together with the relevant unpaid fare.

Young Adult or Student Ticket

Young Adults from 19 to 25 years old and Students can purchase tickets with a valid TFI Young Adult (19-25) Leap Card, TFI Student Leap Card or a valid Translink Student Discount card in the passengers name. Failure to produce a valid ticket, appropriate ID, or surcharge where necessary will result in a fine of €100 together with the relevant unpaid fare.

Ticket Collection

  • Collect at Ticket Machine – customers must collect their ticket(s) before boarding from a Ticket Vending Machine at any Iarnród Éireann station (within the Republic of Ireland). 
  • Download QR Ticket(s) - customers can download the PDF (which includes their QR code ticket) to their mobile device, or print the PDF ticket at home in advance of travel

Bicycle Accommodation

  • Where bicycle accommodation is available, the maximum size that can be carried is up to 1.8 meters in length and up to 0.865m in width
  • When you purchase a wheelchair reservation, you will be presented with information in your booking confirmation email to help plan your journey

Bye-laws and Conditions of Carriage

Failure to produce a valid ticket or appropriate ID where necessary will result in a fine of €100 together with the relevant unpaid fare. Any ticket which has become defaced, illegible, mutilated, torn, split, lost, mislaid or stolen will not be valid for travel, replaced or eligible for refund. Customers must purchase a new ticket to travel.
