Applications are invited for the position of Data Architect within the Chief Information Officer’s Department. This role will report into the Head of Data Analytics and Intelligence.
As a Data Architect, you will play a strategic role in shaping Iarnród Éireann’s enterprise data landscape. You will be responsible for designing and implementing robust, scalable data architecture frameworks and governance standards that enable seamless integration, high-quality analytics, and data-driven decision-making across the organisation. This role offers the opportunity to drive the company’s data strategy while working with cutting-edge cloud technologies and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and oversee scalable, secure, and high-performing enterprise data architectures
- Develop enterprise data models to support data integration, analytics, and operational processes
- Work closely with IT, cybersecurity, and data teams to ensure alignment with architectural principles.
- Lead the implementation of data governance practices including metadata management, data cataloguing, and data lineage
- Provide leadership in data integration, quality, and management across platforms
- Contribute to the ongoing development of IÉ’s data strategy and governance framework
- Monitor and recommend emerging data architecture trends and technologies

Essential Qualifications
- Level 8 qualification or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years' experience in data architecture or engineering roles
- Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise data architecture in cloud environments (preferably Azure and Fabric)
- Strong understanding of data governance, security, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, NIS2)
- Experience with technologies such as Spark, Delta Lake, and lakehouse architectures
Desirable Qualifications
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., AZ-900, DP-203, DP-500, DP-700); TOGAF or CISMP certification
- Familiarity with tools like MS Purview, Alfabet, and ARIS
- Experience in real-time data architectures and integrating machine learning within data pipelines
Competencies
Technical – Strong enterprise data modelling (conceptual, logical, physical); Proficient in Python, R, Pyspark, SQL; Familiar with distributed data systems and cloud platforms (preferably Azure and Fabric)
Planning & Organising – Ability to define and enforce architecture principles; experienced in agile environments and delivering scalable solutions
Communication – Excellent documentation and stakeholder engagement; ability to translate technical solutions into business language
Managing Relationships – Proven track record of collaboration with IT, business, and governance teams; able to support and mentor others in data architecture best practices
