It is an exciting time to be a part of Irish Rail’s busy Railway Undertaking (RU) Chief Mechanical Engineer Department! Applications for the position of RU Senior Technical Executive (Environment) are now invited.
Acting in an environmentally responsible manner and promoting environmental enhancement are key parts of Iarnród Éireann's commitments and the corporate Sustainability Strategy. Therefore, Iarnród Éireann has substantial environmental obligations in line with national targets, including compliance with legislative requirements for emissions reduction, waste management improvements, circular economy initiatives, water conservation, and biodiversity enhancement.
The Senior Technical Executive (Environment) will provide specialist expertise in legal compliance, environmental management, and sustainability initiatives. This role will focus on advancing circular economy and waste reduction strategies, as well as water and energy conservation efforts. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing, advising, and driving the initiatives necessary for the CME and Operations Departments to achieve their environmental objectives. The role will also involve the project management of remediation of historically contaminated sites.
Essential criteria:
- Level 8 degree in Environmental related discipline.
- 10 years post graduate work experience in an environmental field.
- Detailed knowledge of Irish and EU Environmental legislation.
- Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and ISO14001 Standard.
- Ability to work on own initiative incl. leading and managing change.
Desirable criteria:
- Experience and/or knowledge of environmental aspects and impacts within a railway/transport environment.
- Experience and/or knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experience in developing, maintaining and analysing environmental data management systems.
- Ability to develop, engage with and drive new initiatives / improvement programmes.
- Ability to build relationships across wide and diverse groups.
- Strong focus on teamwork relationship.
- ISO 14001 Internal Auditor’s Certification.
- Professional Certifications:
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or equivalent
- Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment – IEMA, Engineers Ireland)
- Experience with SAP accountancy programme.
- Project Management Skills.
- Experience dealing with remediation of contaminated sites (soil/groundwater).
