Business Enterprise Architect

About the Role

Iarnród Éireann is seeking a Business Enterprise Architect to help align business strategy, operating models, capabilities, processes, and technology change across the organisation.

This is a strategic role for someone who can work confidently with senior stakeholders, business teams, ICT, procurement, and external partners. The successful candidate will develop clear business architecture views, support transformation planning, and ensure that business change is connected to enterprise architecture principles and delivery outcomes.

What You Will Do

  • Analyse the business environment, strategic drivers, opportunities, and challenges facing the organisation.
  • Develop and maintain business architecture models, frameworks, and artefacts covering capabilities, value streams, processes, systems, and organisational impacts.
  • Assess current and future-state business architecture and identify gaps, risks, dependencies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Define and communicate business architecture options that support strategic goals and enterprise architecture standards.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects, solution architects, analysts, developers, project managers, procurement, and business teams to shape feasible and consistent solutions.
  • Provide guidance and oversight during implementation to ensure business solutions remain aligned with agreed architecture.
  • Monitor outcomes and benefits from business solutions and recommend improvements.
  • Produce concise architecture documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate business architecture activities across major initiatives.
  • Establish and improve business architecture governance, processes, methods, and standards.
  • Engage senior management and key stakeholders to secure support for business architecture initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships across business units, ICT, procurement, and external partners.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues on business architecture concepts, methods, and tools.
  • Stay current with trends, best practice, and innovation in business architecture and enterprise transformation.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong business acumen and the ability to understand organisational strategy, operating context, business drivers, and stakeholder needs.
  • Experience developing business capability models, value streams, process models, operating model views, and architecture artefacts.
  • Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and work across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience supporting large-scale transformation programmes.
  • Familiarity with sustainability or ESG-driven transformation initiatives would be advantageous.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, management, information systems, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 7 years' experience in enterprise architecture, business architecture, business analysis, business process management, strategic change, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of business architecture methods and tools such as BIZBOK, Business Model Canvas, value stream mapping, and business capability modelling.
  • Knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks and notations such as TOGAF, Zachman, and ArchiMate.
  • Knowledge of business analysis and process improvement techniques such as SWOT, PESTLE, stakeholder analysis, requirements analysis, BPMN, Lean, and Six Sigma.
  • Familiarity with project delivery approaches such as Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, or hybrid delivery models.
  • Experience with information systems that support business capabilities and processes, such as CRM, ERP, BI, and cloud platforms.
  • Practical knowledge of ARIS and Alfabet EA tools is desirable.
  • Experience in the railway, transport, public sector, utilities, or another complex regulated environment would be advantageous.
