Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail is undertaking a record investment programme, benefiting the national rail network and services across the regions and cities. This will enable rail as the backbone of Ireland’s sustainable transport network. The National Development Plan and the ambitious programme outlined in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review will deliver a transformation of rail services for passengers and freight, and expand the rail network, services and electrification significantly.
Supported by our funding partners we will invest in trains, infrastructure, stations and customer service. Investment will also support the national Climate Action Plan, and includes:
- New train carriages to cater for growing demand, with electric, battery electric carriages and tri mode models included

Four North Project
Iarnród Éireann is progressing Four North, a rail infrastructure project along the Dublin Connolly-Malahide line, to improve the operations of services by making space for more frequent and faster trains along the busiest rail routes which is a critical link in Ireland’s rail network.

Berth 3 Upgrade Project
The Berth 3 Upgrade Project will deliver important infrastructure improvements at Rosslare Europort to support the continued development of the port, improve operational resilience and strengthen Ireland's direct maritime connectivity with mainland Europe.
Cork Area Commuter Rail
The Cork Area Commuter Rail (CACR) programme is a key part of the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS) 2040, developed by the National Transport Authority in partnership with Cork City and County Councils and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. This transformative investment will enhance the heavy rail network across the region, connecting Mallow, Cork, Cobh, and Midleton, with increased train capacity, frequency, and new stations.
East Coast Railway Infrastructure Protection Projects ECRIPP
The East Coast Railway Infrastructure Protection Projects (ECRIPP) will deliver enhanced coastal protection works to the existing railway infrastructure on the rail network between Dublin and Wicklow due to coastal erosion and climate effects.<br />
Oranmore Station
Iarnród Éireann has received planning permission from Galway County Council and Galway City Council for works at Oranmore to allow more trains to operate between Galway and Athenry. The project will see a one kilometre section of double track at Oranmore Station, and a new second 185-metre long platform constructed also.
New Stations
Iarnród Éireann plan to develop a new rail station in Cabra and Kylemore in Dublin, as well as a new station at Moyross, County Limerick.
Rosslare Offshore Renewable Energy Hub
Rosslare Europort, supported by Port Authority Iarnród Éireann, has a vision to become the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) hub for Ireland’s South-East. The hub will service the emerging offshore wind industry and help support the government’s offshore wind target of seven gigawatts of power from ORE by 2030.
Waterford North Quays
Waterford City and County Council (WCCC) are progressing the North Quays Strategic Development Zone (NQ SDZ) located on the northern banks of the River Suir Estuary in Waterford City centre. The NQ SDZ provides for a mixed use development with supporting transport infrastructure.
Ceannt Station Redevelopment
Work is ongoing on the Ceannt Station redevelopment which commenced at the start of 2024. The redevelopment is funded by the Department of Housing's Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the National Transport Authority. It will ensure Ceannt Station - perhaps the best located railway and bus station in Ireland's major cities - becomes an expanded and integrated transport hub in the heart of Galway.

As part of the Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail Rail Freight Strategy 2040 and working with our colleagues in the Shannon Foynes Port Company, we are planning to deliver a reliable, frequent and sustainable logistics option for the many companies using the port of Foynes.

Clár DART+
Is sraith tionscadal é an Clár DART+ a dhéanfadh forbairt agus leathnú ar an líonra DART i Mórcheantar Bhaile Átha Cliath, ag tógáil ar cheann de mhór-scéalta ratha na hÉireann maidir le hiompar poiblí, an DART (Taisteal Gasta Limistéar Bhaile Átha Cliath).
