Waterford North Quays

Waterford City and County Council (WCCC) are progressing the North Quays Strategic Development Zone (NQ SDZ) located on the northern banks of the River Suir Estuary in Waterford City centre. The NQ SDZ provides for a mixed use development with supporting transport infrastructure.

The development includes the construction of a transport hub and Railway Station approximately 1km to the East of the existing Plunkett Station at the centre of the NQ SDZ. The development will be linked by a new sustainable transport bridge into the heart of Waterford city.

The new railway station requires remodelling and upgrading of the existing track and signalling works. Rock face stabilisation works have taken places at the existing station and the scheme will seek to address the existing flooding issues both of which are currently restricting operations in Waterford.

The development involves the construction of a number of new structures as well as some alterations to existing Iarnród Éireann infrastructure. In summary, the primary works consists of the following:

  • The construction of a bridge over the railway at the Transport Hub providing a connection for pedestrians between the Transport Hub and new station / development and housing the ticket hall / concourse area of the new station
  • The construction of a footbridge over the railway at the Western end of the new station
  • The construction of two vehicular bridges over the railway
  • Relocating the existing Plunkett Railway Station, Waterford to a new location approximately 1km to the East of the existing station. This involves construction of railway platforms, access stairs, lifts, storage facilities, offices and toilets, a ticket desk, public toilets, retail unit and other related ancillary facilities
  • The realignment and provision of double track in the vicinity of the proposed new railway station
  • Signalling works to facilitate the new station
  • Removal / decommissioning of the existing level crossing into the North Quays
  • The construction of two vehicular bridges over the disused New Ross Railway Line
  • Ancillary works such as Rock Stabilisation and Flood Mitigation.

Spring 2026 has been identified as the proposed opening date for the new station following the completion of the construction works and commissioning of the new trackwork and signalling system.
