22 Eanáir 2026
Iarnród Éireann has placed an order for 68 infrastructure maintenance wagons, to replace their existing fleet, with UK-based supplier W.H Davis. These wagons will be used to transport rails, sleepers and track panels across the network. The current infrastructure maintenance wagon fleet were built in the Inchicore Works, Dublin over 50 years ago and nearing their end of service life. Every Year Iarnród Éireann carries out thousands of hours of planned maintenance on our 2,400km of track, including repairs and renewals.
This follows on from an order for 150 freight Intermodal wagons from the same framework, which was placed in April of last year. The new freight fleet prototypes are currently in production and are expected to begin delivery to Iarnród Éireann from summer 2027 and following a period of testing and commissioning are expected to enter service from late summer 2027 onward.
The infrastructure maintenance wagons will be manufactured at W.H Davis’ Nottinghamshire plant in the United Kingdom. The estimated value of the order is €23 million and is an important investment for current and future developments at Iarnród Éireann. Their estimated design weight is 18-20 tonnes, and their payload capacity will be in the region of 60 tonnes an increase of 33% on the current LX and LP Freight wagons.
Speaking at the contractor signing, Director of Infrastructure with Iarnród Éireann, Éamonn Ballance said:
"This order for maintenance wagons will future proof our maintenance programme for generations to come and will ensure efficiency and reliability for my teams who work right across our network to ensure that our infrastructure is safe and well maintained”
