Iarnród Éireann has submitted a planning application to Kildare County Council for a major accessibility upgrade at Leixlip Louisa Bridge Station.

Part of Iarnród Éireann’s ongoing Accessibility Programme and funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority, the proposed upgrade includes new lifts and a new bridge.

Some additional works are also planned include:

  • New staircases on both platforms
  • A new waiting shelter on Platform 2
  • Ancillary works to facilitate the proposed development

Iarnrod Éireann’s ongoing investment programme is to continuously improve accessibility of its stations and services. The company’s Disability Users Group provides direct input from disability representative bodies and users of rail services in developing accessibility programmes and projects.

A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said “our ongoing programme to enhance accessibility at our stations is designed to ensure all customers have access to public transport. Today’s planning application is another important milestone in delivering improved accessibility and enhanced customer experience across the network. We look forward to progressing with these important works subject to planning and funding approvals.”

Subject to planning approval it is expected that detailed design will take place in 2027 and construction will commence in 2028, with an approximate build time of 9 months.
