Who are family train tickets for?
Family tickets are valid for a return journey for 1-2 adults and up to 4 children from 5-18 years old. Day returns and open returns can be bought on our Low Flex tickets. For more on our ticket types, click here.
Family tickets are valid on Intercity services. They are not available for journeys in the Dublin Commuter Zone. Children under 5 years* old can travel for free. If you are travelling with a child under 5 years old, we advise that your book a 'Seat Only Reservation'. This will make sure your child gets a seat on the train.
Where can I buy family tickets for the train?
Family tickets for InterCity journeys can be purchased online with our Low Fare tickets or from the Booking Offices and Ticket Vending Machines in stations.
*Children aged 5 to 8 can now travel free on Transport for Ireland (TFI) services with a Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card. For more information and to apply, please visit the Leap Card website.

Terms and Conditions
- Restrictions might apply to ticket sales on certain days or routes. We advise that you book in advance to avoid this.
- At least 1 adult and 1 child must travel on Family Rail Tickets. A max of 2 adults and 4 children can travel on this ticket type.
- Children must be 5-18 years old for Intercity Tickets.
- Family Day Return Tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket.
- If you buy a Family Open Return Ticket, the outward portion must be used on the date it was booked for. The return portion can be used up to 30 days from this date.
- Family tickets are valid on all Intercity services. They can not be used on journeys in the Dublin City and Commuter Zone..
Leap Card
