  • You can purchase the ticket above using our Journey Planner. Tickets can only be purchased up to 90 days in advance.
  • An allocation of bookings on all InterCity services can be reserved online without a fee for 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders'. When this allocation is fully booked, all remaining seats can be reserved by 'Free Travel Pass or valid ticket holders' for €2.50 per journey.

Chief Mechanical Engineering (CME) Graduate Programme

The Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) is a department within the Railway Undertaking business. It has over five hundred and twenty staff, 1 x large worksite and 7 x Depots.

The goal is to provide Safe, Clean & Reliable Trains for our customers. Our train fleet comprises of over 900 vehicles with fleets from Japan, Korea, Spain, USA, Germany, France. We have Electric (Dublin DART), Diesel (Commuter / Intercity), Locomotives and Carriages and Freight Wagons.

Work Placement 1, 2 and 3 : Depot and Workshop Experience

The activities undertaken in the depots will include rolling stock maintenance and repair. While in the workshops at Inchicore the graduate will experience component overhaul and manufacturing within Iarnrod Eireann Irish Rail.

Graduates will have the opportunity to work alongside our Fleet Technical Support (FTS) specialists in addressing faults on the fleet.Graduates will also work alongside our skilled Craft workers and technicians during the maintenance cycles to develop a full appreciation of all fleets. 

Graduates will be afforded an opportunity to experience first-hand the role of the Fleet Manager and see how a depot is managed and run.

Work Placement 4 : Drawing and Design Department

The activities undertaken in the Drawing & Design Department include:

  • The design and development of rolling stock modifications and enhancement projects (electrical & mechanical).
  • Design and development of specialist tools and equipment required to undertake rolling stock maintenance.
  • Preparation and updating of engineering drawings.
  • Provision of specialist engineering support to front line depot teams.
  • The development and specification of vehicle exterior liveries, interior aesthetic designs and vehicle signage.

This is a crucial department in the CME organisation and provides a vital support service to front line depots and workshops. Graduates will have the opportunity to work alongside an experienced team of Mechanical and Electrical Draughts people.

Work Placement 5 : Train Operations Experience

The RU Operations department is responsible for all passenger services delivered across the Network.
Graduates will have the opportunity to experience Rail Operations at the frontline line.

Work Placement 6 : Central Traffic Control, Infrastructure Manager, Operations Planning, Civil and Signaling Engineering Experience

The Infrastructure Management (IM) department is responsible for all aspects of Rail Infrastructure provision. 
This includes everything from design, build, maintenance and operation of all of the track and signalling systems that makes up the railway network owned by Iarnród Éireann. 

The IM department also manage timetabling and operate Central Traffic Control, the facility that is responsible for co-ordinating all train movements on the network. Graduates will gain appreciation for train operation and scheduling of trains to operate a timetable. They will also understand the complexity of the factors affecting train operations from the Infrastructure Managers perspective.

Graduates will have the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the IM Department and work with Civil and Signalling Engineers during this placement.

Work Placement 7 : Project Management

The technical department of CME is responsible for the delivery of a number of fleet related projects.
These projects are very diverse in nature and represent a major investment on behalf of the company. Typical examples are:

  • Purchase of new fleets or individual vehicles
  • Locomotive re-power projects
  • On-board safety system enhancements
  • Fleet mid-life refurbishments
  • Implementation of remote condition monitoring

During this final placement, graduates will be assigned to work on a specific project or as part of a project team.
