Applications are invited for the position of Data Engineer within the Chief Information Officer’s Department. This role will report into the Head of Data Analytics and Intelligence.
As a Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in building and maintaining the data infrastructure that underpins Iarnród Éireann’s digital transformation. You will design and deliver robust, secure, and scalable data pipelines that enable high-quality, timely, and trusted data to support decision-making at all levels of the organisation. Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines to integrate data from various sources into a Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse environment
- Support and improve existing data infrastructure, ensuring reliability and performance
- Deliver tested, documented, and production-ready data services within agile workflows
- Collaborate with analysts and stakeholders to support enterprise data assets and insights generation
- Apply automation, orchestration, and advanced engineering techniques to improve data delivery and enable self-service analytics
- Contribute to machine learning model deployment within production data pipelines
- Champion data quality, profiling, monitoring, and compliance in collaboration with Security and DPO teams
- Promote best practices for data engineering, governance, and continuous integration and delivery.

Essential Qualifications
- Level 8 qualification or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a data engineering or similar role
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure and Fabric), and tools like Apache Spark and Delta Lake
- Knowledge of DataOps and professional engineering practices, including version control, CI/CD, and testing.
Desirable Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Apache Spark
- Experience deploying ML and AI models in production
- Familiarity with real-time data and Power Platform tools (e.g., Power Automate, Copilot Studio)
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., AZ-900, DP-203, DP-600, DP-700).
Competencies
Technical – Proficient in Python, PySpark, R, SQL; strong experience integrating data from SAP, Oracle, MS Dynamics, SQL Server; familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and cloud platforms
Planning & Organising – Proven ability to deliver and support robust data infrastructure in agile environments; strong multitasking and continuous improvement mindset
Communication – Clear documentation and reporting; ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Managing Relationships – Collaborative team player with stakeholder engagement experience across IT and business functions.
