Iarnród Éireann is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to join the Network Enhancements Team within our Capital Investments Division. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead the delivery of rail infrastructure projects that are critical to the continued growth, safety, and sustainability of Ireland’s rail network.
As Senior Project Manager, you will assist the Programme Manager in managing a portfolio of complex, multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring they are delivered to the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance. With project values ranging from €10m to €500m, this is a leadership role that demands both technical expertise and exceptional management skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage project teams including engineers, resident site supervisors, consultants, and contractors to deliver Network Enhancement projects on time and within scope
- Take responsibility for project delivery, from preliminary design and statutory processes through to procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover
- Oversee the application of Iarnród Éireann and Capital Investments Division standards, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, the Construction Regulations, and safety frameworks such as IM-SMS-014 and Commission for Railway Regulation APIS process
- Provide accurate monitoring, reporting, and performance analysis of all project activities, highlighting risks and ensuring appropriate mitigation measures are implemented
- Manage and report on all financial aspects of projects, including preparing and controlling budgets and ensuring alignment with procurement policies
- Lead direct reports including Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, and Site Supervisors, providing clear direction, support, and development opportunities
- Build strong relationships with key internal stakeholders across signalling, civil engineering, electrification, IT, procurement, operations, and finance
- Represent Iarnród Éireann with external stakeholders such as the National Transport Authority, Commission for Railway Regulation, utility providers, and local authorities.
Key Qualities:
Essential:
- Level 8/9 degree in Building, Engineering, Construction, or Project Management
- Chartered status with Engineers Ireland or equivalent recognised professional body
- Minimum of 15 years’ project delivery experience in a relevant engineering environment
- Proven record of managing complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects with budgets from €10m to €500m
- Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, manage contractors, and deliver results under pressure
- Strong leadership, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent commercial awareness and financial acumen
- Full clean driving licence, with flexibility to work occasional weekends and nights as project demands require
Desirable:
- Experience delivering projects within the railway, transport, or wider infrastructure sector
- Knowledge of contract law and contract management, with experience of the Capital Works Management Framework (CWMF), Public Works Contracts, or NEC contracts
- Familiarity with European and national safety, planning, and environmental legislation
- Experience managing the delivery of Railway Safety Certification, including the APIS process
- Proven ability to produce tender documentation and funding applications, particularly for the National Transport Authority
- Technical understanding of track, signalling, and multidisciplinary approvals processes
- Experience managing multiple ‘new build’ and refurbishment projects in parallel
